Here’s some shots taken on Fuji Natura 1600 film. I shot this during the day and exposed it at ISO 400. The great thing about Fuji film is that it has really great latitude. I also used a neutral density filter so I could shoot wide open at f/1.1 some of the time. You can see in one of the shots the vignetting that happens when using an ND filter and shooting at f/1.1. This film as far as I know is currently only available in Japan and in 35mm format and goes for about 800 yen for a roll of 36. Definitely a film that I will be constantly shipping back with me to New Zealand for our wedding photography! Leica M7, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Fuji Film Natura 1600.

I don’t know where to begin in describing this photo. It was one of those moments when a magical scene unfolded with the most amazing light. Snapping this shot I wasn’t too sure if I had nailed the focus or not. Shooting with medium format at f/2 is often a real challenge so when I got the scan back I was really disappointed at first. I had missed the focus on the couple and got it slightly behind them. But over the past week I’ve flicked past this shot a few times and it has started to grow on me. The slight out of focus doesn’t bother me too much, I still get the same feeling when I look at the photo as I did when I saw it in my head. I especially love the father and son on the left hand side and the color pallet of the whole scene. Let me know what you think. Contax 645, Zeiss Planar T* 80mm f/2, Fuji Pro 400H film.

I’m going to really miss photographing around areas like this. These were taken in Daikanyama, Tokyo, Japan. This area is quite well known for it’s great cafe’s and shopping. It’s a higher class area so it was fun to roam the back streets and find some really interesting houses and stores. I’ll be posting more from these rolls in the next couple of days. I have some really great portraits of friends and street photography to post. Keep an eye out. If you are wondering what is going on in the last photo I shot two photos on the same frame of film. These were all taken with Contax 645, Zeiss Planar T* 80mm f/2, and Fuji Pro 400H film.

This photograph show why I have been so in love with film recently. The way it captures so much detail from shadows to highlights really blew me away. Having really only shot digital until recently I’m so glad that I have listened to other successful photographers in the industry and decided to use more film. I think that I will be a rare case and very unique when I am back in New Zealand working as a wedding / portrait photographer. I can’t imagine there are many New Zealand photographers at all shooting film and I really don’t understand why they aren’t. Not only do you get the added security of having negatives that last generations but it becomes a product that is fully digitized through scanning the film. Win win isn’t it?

I love the look of these and still can’t get over the depth of field that medium format and fast lenses can create. I have a Mamiya C330 on the way with 80mm f/2.8 lens and am really looking forward to shooting some portrait sessions and engagement sessions coming up.
