While I’m back in New Zealand the other half of St Clair Photography is still in Tokyo for a few more weeks. Eiko has been shooting friends in and around Tokyo, I absolutely love this photograph. It’s nice to see a fresh perspective that differs from my own, where I would probably focus on the subject here she has focused on the background which I think has made the photograph a lot stronger. This was taken on a Ricoh GR1-s which we picked up about a month ago. It’s a little 35mm film camera and the lens is razor sharp. Ricoh GR1-s, Ilford XP2 Super 400 film.

Well finally after waiting for a couple of weeks to get this wedding back I’m finally able to give you a preview! Believe it or not but the bridesmaid called me to see if I had posted anything up yet!! Haha, you know who you are… and I’m so appreciative of the feeling that she gave me when doing so, a feeling that people really want to see what I can do. Eating, eating and more eating before I leave. This was shot at the ‘Holy Cafe’ in Daikanyama, Tokyo. Really nice all concrete interior which only the Japanese know how to pull off properly. Leica M7, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Fuji Pro 800Z film.

I have so much personal work to blog! These past couple of weeks we’ve been going around cool cafes and restaurants spending our time hanging out, meeting friends and shopping. I’m really going to miss places like this, there are so many hidden treasures around Tokyo, hidden in seedy looking buildings on the eighth floor or down a creepy alley. I’m really going to miss exploring. These were shot in nearly pitch black lighting at Attic Room in Shibuya, Tokyo. Leica M7, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Fuji Pro 800Z film.

A couple of days ago I had the chance to photograph our friend Viviane. She’s from Taiwan and is living here in Tokyo studying art. There are a lot of things I’m going to miss about Tokyo when I leave. It always amazes me to see Japanese women going through the effort of wearing a kimono solely for the purpose of going to the park… I think I’m really going to miss the fact that Japanese people really care about aesthetics, in any form. An appreciation for presentation and attention to detail is something that I really admire in Japanese culture. Well I guess it’s back to jandels and beer bellies.
