HI, WELCOME TO THE BLOG OF ST CLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY

We are wedding and portrait photographers based in New Zealand. We currently skip back and forth between Japan and New Zealand shooting everything from weddings to model portfolios and portrait sessions. We are available to shoot nationwide including Waikato / Auckland / Wellington / Christchurch / Dunedin, and also internationally. We shoot both medium format / 35mm film, and digital. Have fun looking through our photos, come back often and see what we're up to. We hope to hear from you whether you're interested in meeting with us, or just want to chat about photography.

Film is not dead… at least for me it isn’t

This photograph show why I have been so in love with film recently. The way it captures so much detail from shadows to highlights really blew me away. Having really only shot digital until recently I’m so glad that I have listened to other successful photographers in the industry and decided to use more film. I think that I will be a rare case and very unique when I am back in New Zealand working as a wedding / portrait photographer. I can’t imagine there are many New Zealand photographers at all shooting film and I really don’t understand why they aren’t. Not only do you get the added security of having negatives that last generations but it becomes a product that is fully digitized through scanning the film. Win win isn’t it?

November 4, 2009 - 6:20 am Aaron - I like the pic, interesting it is not digital, you always lose some quality scanning, the picture looks superb

November 4, 2009 - 12:25 pm Jason - Hey Aaron, these are not great scans. When I'm back in New Zealand I will be getting all my film scanned on Fuji Frontier machines. Digital won't come anywhere near the quality of film processed and scanned on those machines. With that scanner you can get about 9 stops of dynamic range out of the negatives which is more than double that of photos shot on digital. This is all done by a professional lab mind you, not cheap. If you're interested in talking about this stuff send me an email at info@stclair-photography.com and I can put you in touch with some great people from a great lab in NZ.
