This wouldn’t and doesn’t look out of place at all in Tokyo where it was shot. Using film cameras and shooting film in Japan is surprisingly common, film is still living on with both amateurs and professionals. The store where I used to buy film was the size of any ‘decent’ camera store here in New Zealand and they only sold film, nothing else. I really wonder why film has died out here in New Zealand, it surely doesn’t help when stores are charging $40 for a roll of Ilford 35mm, yes you read that right. It’s really not a positive way to encourage more people to use film again or use it for the first time. I’ve even been told you should buy film from said local store in New Zealand to help support local businesses instead of importing it yourself… Well I would love to but if I do that I’d have to sell my film camera to pay for the film. I love film and the unique look it gives to photographs, I love the little bit of surprise you get when you develop the roll and see what became of the moment you wanted to capture, I’ll keep shooting film until the day I can’t get my hands on another roll. Shot above: Leica M7, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Fuji Pro 800Z film.

June 15, 2010 - 12:18 pm - Virtual high five to you!!! As you know I am just beginning my film buying process and yup I brought off shore and having it shipped... crazy really!!!
June 15, 2010 - 1:27 pm - Film prices and developing costs have gone up considerably in NZ since just a year ago, and I agree its not the way to encourage first time users or any sales for that matter. Heck I just bought into a 4x5 system, although the costs do weigh heavily into how you shoot, they never outweigh the beauty of a getting a developed roll back and hitting the lightbox with a loupe...
June 15, 2010 - 2:32 pm - 800Z.. the best. PCL just increased their film stock prices too. They told me they were selling under cost. A roll of 120 Reala went up $5. Even some guy was trying to pawn off LOMO film on trademe for $30 a roll... I'm going to be ordering self-dev kits for each e6, c41 and b&w soon. Then again, I've got it much easier than you because I'm not doing it professionally, so I do understand that you position is even worse with film dev costs. But I wouldn't worry so much about film ceasing to exist, someone will always make it. Even Polaroid was less popular, it gets discontinued and The Impossible Project picks it up and now its more popular than it has ever been in the last 5 years and gaining in popularity. Film is going the same way, there are heaps of people going back to it, people are getting bored with digital and looking for something to make their work different and more personal. Unfortunately importing it is the only sensible option at the moment. BTW, when importing, what do you do about x-ray's?
June 15, 2010 - 3:11 pm - I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining, I shoot film because I love it and think it's worth it. I can understand that prices need to go up because of the lack of people shooting it. It just seems like a bit of a catch 22. Virtual high five Fiona! Seems the only way really. Shaun, nice, 4x5 I'm really jealous! Ari, a roll of Reala 120 in Japan is about $8 NZ. Haha, 'LOMO' film..! Yeah I'm not planning on developing my own stuff for my professional work but keen to get some of those kits for my personal work. Can't complain at $10 developing for 220 C41 and $5 for 35mm C41 at my local lab. B&W 120 cost $12. By the time I mucked around and did it myself I'm not really sure it's worth the hassle..
June 16, 2010 - 1:38 pm - What?! In Hamilton?! The only place left in Auckland that can do b&w is PCL. You know their prices right... at least $20 dev costs per roll. Yeah, and their roll of reala costs $18 now. Rubbish.
June 17, 2010 - 1:17 pm - Yup, wow that's a lot for one roll..
