We saw the beginning of 2010 at Zojoji Temple and the releasing of over 3000 balloons into the air. Now, before any environmentalists keel over in disbelief I can tell you these balloons are made from what the Japanese call “Oblaat”. “Oblaat” is the thin clear material that surrounds medicine capsules that dissolve in water. So, breathe a sigh of relief, these balloons will eventually dissolve. The idea is to write a wish and tie it to the string of the balloon then let it float off into the new year. Beautiful and poetic, an amazing way to spend my last new year in Tokyo. Leica M7, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Fuji Pro 800Z film.
Zojoji Temple New Years Eve 2009
January 11, 2010 - 10:07 pm - Ohhh looks fun. In Auckland people were lighting up Chinese Lanterns along the waterfront. But they aren't anywhere near as cool as 3000 dissolving balloons are they? I think you're going to miss Japan quite a bit. Have you played around with the Nokton 35mm 1.2 before?
